Rising Waters: A Community Play Rooted in Chew Valley
In July 2024, Valley Arts premiered Rising Waters, a bold and imaginative community play staged at Yeo Valley Organic Garden. Inspired by Chew Valley’s folklore, environmental concerns, and lived histories, the production was the result of over a year of collaboration between local residents and a professional creative team.
The story followed a fictional ensemble preparing a commemorative performance about the 1968 floods—only to be interrupted by a mysterious visitor with a message from the river. Blending humour, music, and visual spectacle, the play explored themes of memory, resilience, and our relationship with nature.
A giant fish puppet, crafted through community workshops, made its dramatic debut during the show. Built by volunteers of all ages, it became a symbol of collective creativity and environmental hope.
Over 1000 people were directly involved through workshops, school visits, and a writing competition. Before each performance, audience members explored the gardens while listening to community-written pieces on the theme of water. The cast featured local performers of all ages, supported by a professional design and production team. Four performances took place with Blagdon Lake as a stunning backdrop, and subsidised tickets ensured accessibility for all.
Funded by Arts Council England, Mendip Hills Fund, The Newton Project and Bristol Water, Rising Waters was more than a play—it was a celebration of community spirit, creativity, and environmental reflection.
