The Magic Flute – Opera in a Box
Friday 11th July 2025 – 7pm
Yeo Valley Organic Garden, Blagdon
Opera in a Box is set to bring Mozart’s The Magic Flute to the South West in an exhilarating 2025 summer tour, revamping the classic into a vibrant, accessible experience.
Known for reshaping opera’s boundaries, Opera in a Box uses unconventional venues—like barns, gardens, and historic castles—and welcomes fresh talent from across the arts to deliver productions that engage diverse audiences.
Launched to acclaim, the company merges opera’s traditional elements with contemporary twists, offering audiences intimate and electrifying performances. Past productions, like Hansel & Gretel , have seen enthusiastic feedback. Audience members have shared that “Opera in a Box delivers an evening of magic for all ages,” and have praised its blend of high-quality musical artistry with innovative staging. The Bristol Magazine noted their Carmen brought opera to a wide audience with a refreshing approach, while past patrons have called their performances “top notch,” emphasising the immediacy that small venues bring to such high-calibre singing and staging.

The Magic Flute promises to continue this innovative trend. Set against a backdrop of mystery and enchantment, Mozart’s timeless fairy-tale follows Prince Tamino’s quest to rescue Pamina, with the help of a magic flute and his comical sidekick Papageno. Opera in a Box’s creative team will bring this story to life with imaginative designs, adding layers of visual and emotional depth to themes of love, courage, and wisdom. Their interpretation leans into the surreal and spiritual, blending humour with dramatic tension. Past patrons have highlighted the group’s ability to make opera feel fresh and dynamic, noting that each production makes “catching up on operatic classics…in intimate settings” a unique and unforgettable experience.
If you’re looking for a summer outing that redefines opera, The Magic Flute from Opera in a Box is sure to be a memorable highlight for both opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
