Join Amal Khreisheh, Senior Curator at the South West Heritage Trust to hear about the record-breaking Chew Valley Hoard.

Join the conversation with Valley Arts and explore how our community can celebrate this landmark discovery.

The coin hoard of 2,584 silver pennies dates from the turmoil of the Norman Conquest of England c.1066-68. Valued at £4.3 million, its acquisition by the South West Heritage Trust in October 2024 is the highest value treasure on record. This was made possible thanks to major funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Art Fund.

The hoard was discovered in January 2019 by seven finders while metal detecting in the Chew Valley. Amal will reveal the story of the hoard’s discovery and present expert opinion about why the hoard was buried and how it lay hidden for almost 1,000 years.

Find out why the hoard is so historically important, what it tells us about the history of the South West and why it is valued so highly.

Then join Valley Arts and help us consider how we might creatively celebrate this historic event in 2026 as the Hoard starts its journey from the British Museum to its final home in Somerset. A large scale community production is planned for summer 2026.

The presentation and discussion ( without Amal) will also take place on:

Thursday 6th November – 6.30pm

Stanton Drew Village Hall, BS39 4EL

Wednesday 12th November – 7.30pm

West Harptree Memorial Hall, BS40 6EG
