In January 2019, seven local people discovered one of the most extraordinary archaeological finds in British history, right here in the Chew Valley.
This summer, Valley Arts is bringing that story home!
Every Coin Tells a Story is a free community celebration day in the heart of Chew Magna: a chance to come together, get hands-on with history, and be part of something that belongs to this valley.
Join us on Saturday 20 June. No need to book, just turn up and enjoy the festivities!

Free parking is available nearby. The event runs across Millennium Hall, the Upper and Lower Halls, and the courtyard.
WHAT’S ON
See the coins
A small selection of the actual Chew Valley Hoard on display for one day only, with South West Heritage Trust Senior Curator Amal Khreisheh on hand to bring the story to life.
Strike your own coin
Have a go at making your own coin, just like the moneyers of 1067. Take it home with you.
Screen printing
Print a bespoke design based on a Harold or William coin to take home. Free to take part.
Mint Yourself
Take a side-profile portrait and drop it into your own digital coin design, complete with your own edge inscription. A modern take on a thousand-year-old tradition.
Macro photography
See the coins as you’ve never seen them before, magnified to reveal details invisible to the naked eye.
Medieval dress up
Step into the past, try on some medieval costume, and have your photo taken.
Treasure Trail
Follow the trail through the courtyard and churchyard. All ages, no need to book. Pick up your trail map at the information booth in the upper hall
Coin embossing
With Chew Magna artist Giuliana Terran, whose work runs throughout the whole Hoard Project.
Storytelling
Led by Sarah Mooney. Times to be confirmed.
Live music
Ted Waters and Nigel Bookish performing throughout the day.
Cafe
Tea, cake, and good company can be found in the Millenial Hall throughout the day.
