Pirates of Penzance – Opera in a Box
Friday 26th June 2026 – 7pm
Yeo Valley Organic Garden, Blagdon
For the first time, Opera in a Box turns from grand opera to Gilbert and Sullivan with The Pirates of Penzance in a hilarious 2026 summer tour. Known for reshaping opera’s boundaries, Opera in a Box uses unconventional venues—like barns, gardens, and historic castles—and welcomes fresh talent from across the arts to deliver productions that engage diverse audiences. Launched to acclaim, the company merges opera’s traditional elements with contemporary twists, offering audiences intimate and electrifying performances. Past productions, like 2025’s The Magic Flute, have seen enthusiastic feedback. Audience members have shared that “Opera in a Box delivers an evening of magic for all ages,” and have praised its blend of high-quality musical artistry with innovative staging.
The Pirates of Penzance promises to continue this innovative trend. This much-loved comic opera follows Frederic, a young apprentice mistakenly bound to a band of tender-hearted pirates, as he navigates duty, love and cowardly policemen. Celebrated for its sparkling score and razor-sharp wordplay, the operetta delights in its own absurdity while delivering one memorable tune after another.
Opera in a Box’s creative team will bring this lively tale to the stage with wit and charm, highlighting its playful satire and memorable music. Past patrons have highlighted the group’s ability to make opera feel fresh and dynamic, noting that each production makes “catching up on operatic classics…in intimate settings” a unique and unforgettable experience.
If you’re looking for a summer outing that redefines opera, The Pirates of Penzance from Opera in a Box is sure to be a memorable highlight for both opera and operetta enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
“Superb singing, great acting … a triumph in every sense of the word.” The Magic Flute, Wells
